Canberra wraps up range of infrastructure projects

Canberra has completed several fast-tracked infrastructure projects that have been supporting local jobs amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The infrastructure projects are expected to provide Canberrans with better services and make the city a viable option for property seekers.

Chris Steel, minister for transport and city services for Canberra, said these projects have helped support the local economy, particularly the jobs sector.

“These community projects have been delivered alongside work on the ACT government’s largest-ever pipeline of major projects to protect and create jobs while delivering the infrastructure our city needs – so that we can bounce back better,” he said.

One completed project involved the improvement of 13 local shopping centres in older suburbs to help support local businesses.

“We have also invested to improve connectivity in our active travel and public transport networks, with two new park-and-ride locations now available in Lyneham and Evatt, the next stage of the Heysen Street Link completed and a new bike and ride facility ready for use on Barry Drive,” Steel said.

The city also constructed two new modern public toilet facilities at Lake Tuggeranong and John Knight Memorial Park.

Furthermore, the city has increased asphalt patching at various locations across the territory to fix potholes. This is on top of the city’s annual road resurfacing program.

“To round out this program of works we have invested in new bus stops and listened to the community on the relocation of existing bus stops in growth suburbs such as Taylor, Coombs, Wright and Denman Prospect,” Steel said.
